2016InReview: 9 controversial Nigerian politicians

With less than two weeks to 2017, the year 2016 has been an amazing year filled with lots of events and controversies.
2016 also witnessed a number of controversial politicians, especially because there were a lot of events this year, from the budget padding, to the religious bill in Kaduna state.
Some politicians managed to keep Nigerians talking about them through out the year thus increasing their popularity.
Interestingly, some of the politicians who made the list in 2015 have kept their spots; with a few new entrants making the list for 2016.
In no particular order, Afrison.blogspot.com presents the top controversial politicians of 2016:

1. Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose

Fayose remained one of the most vocal critics of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016.
In 2015 he took up newspaper adverts, granted interviews and used the every available means to discourage Nigerians from voting for Buhari.
The Ekiti state governor carried on with his criticism of the president and even hit at the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, accusing her of fraud. In June the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) froze the personal accounts of the Governor
He however did not cease to amuse Nigerians with his unusual habits, which includes feeding children and market women with his birthday cake and wearing an Army camouflage to present the 2017 budget to the State Assembly.
2. Senator Dino Melaye

The Senator representing Kogi Central has a very controversial personality. First he loves very fast and fancy cars and motorbikes, and loves to flaunt them in everybody's face.
In 2016, Melaye has been in the eye of different storms, from political issues to domestic issues. In July, 2016 stirred an uproar in the Senate alleging and threatening the wife the of ex-governor of Lagos state, Senator Oluremi Tinubu during the plenary session.
The lawmaker did not stop there, he made a trip to Lagos to prove that he fears nothing, following threats that he would be dealt with if he comes into Lagos.
Melaye is very outspoken and is not just anyone that could be shut down at anytime. He is ever willing to lock horns with whoever deems himself worthy of a bout.
3. Abdulmumin Jibrin

The All Progressives Congress (APC) member of the House of Representatives representing Kiru/Bebeji constituency of Kano state needs no further introduction.
Jibrin has unarguably dominated political discourse in the country in 2016. The former appropriation chairman, had alleged that the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, and three other principal officers ‘padded’ the 2016 budget.
For a brief period, as Jibrin continued his whistle blowing, with Nigerians regarding him as the ‘messiah’ that would rid the House of the stench of corruption.
He said this was a just cause as he insisted he would purge the House of corruption. But on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, the reps quickly moved against him and he was suspended for 180 legislative days for allegedly breaching the practices and precedents of the House of Representatives.
4. Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike

Wike stirred up controversy when he fell out with his predecessor, now minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
The Rivers state governor has remained controversial as the battle for the soul of Rivers got tougher. Wike had put resources together to see to a realignment of the opposition party, PDP, hence antagonizing the President Buhari administration.
Recently it was alleged that Wike has been caught on an audio recording arranging payment to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a telephone conversation.
Wike had illicit contacts with officials of INEC, in the run up to the rerun elections, on the 10th of December 2016 in Rivers state.
5. Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai

The quiet governor stirred up controversies for himself when he passed a bill titled 'A bill for a law to substitute the Kaduna state religious preaching law, 1984' to the state House of Assembly to regulate religious preaching across the state.
El-Rufai received threats over his life concerning the bill.
Many critics view his administration as Anti Christian government in the State and his headache has always been the popular Socialist Senator, Shehu Sani, who keeps close tab on his government.
6. Speaker House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara

Dogara stirred up controversy immediately he became the leader of the lower chamber. Just when the dust was said to have settled, he was accused of padding the 2016 budget by the former appropriation chairman of the House, Abdulmumin Jibrin.
Dogara became associated with the word, padding, which was widely used in the third and fourth quarter of the year.
7. Chief Femi Fani-Kayode

Fani-Kayode can be described in many ways but controversial would seem to be an understatement.
Becoming the campaign director of Goodluck Jonathan's second term bid, got him into trouble of allegations that funds used for campaign were taken from the Dasuki security vote.
This has got him on the wrong side of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). FFK was seized by the EFFC to answer questions about the Dasuki arms scandal, but after weeks in detention, he was released as usual. The case is still ongoing in the court.
Fani-Kayode has continued to be a bane in the neck of the APC-led government, playing devils advocate in some situations, stirring debates and arguments and at other times, constructively criticizing the current government.
8. Factional chairman Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff

Sheriff remained in the news for a number of controversial reasons all through 2016.
Aside instituting several legal battles against the Senator Ahmed Makarfi faction of the PDP over the leadership of the party, Sheriff’s actions and his overt support for the governorship candidate of his faction, Jimoh Ibrahim, cost the PDP the Ondo 2016 governorship election.
9. Senate President, Bukola Saraki

Just like the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Saraki attracted controversy when he was elected as the Senate president against his party’s wishes with the help of mostly senators belonging to the opposition party.
Saraki remained controversial all through 2016 as he faces different criminal charges alongside his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu. He tried mending fences with the presidency as some of the charges brought against him by the Federal Government were dropped.

SGF, Magu's probe: New twist as minister of justice and Senate leader meets with Buhari

- Senate leader Ndume and minister of justice Malami had a private meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa
- This may not be unconnected with the investigation into alleged corrupt practices leveled against SGF Babachir and EFCC boss Magu
- Ndume said investigations were still ongoing
There may be a new twist in the investigation of alleged corrupt practices leveled against the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Lawal Babachir and acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.
Vanguard reports that both men may be getting a soft landing as the Senate leader Ali Ndume and the minister of justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami Malami, paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa on Monday, December 19.
Senate leader Ndume said Magu and Babachir's issues were still a work in progress

Malami refused to speak to newsmen after the meeting.

Ndume who spoke to newsmen after the closed door meeting with the president gave an impression of new twist to the issues.
According to him, the SGF had not been indicted of any wrong doing by the Senate neither has the nomination of Magu as EFCC chairman been rejected.
He said both issues were still a work in progress as the security of the Department of State Service, DSS which indicted Magu would be further investigated.
Ndume explained that the Senate only stepped down Magu’s screening until issues surrounding the security report concerning him are cleared.
Recall that the SGF had been fonud culpable in the management of funds meant for the welfare of the Internally Displaced Persons in the north east. He was said to be making millions of naira of public funds from non-executed contracts in the troubled north-east using one of his companies.
Also, last week, the Senate rejected Magu’s nomination and declined to confirm him as EFCC chairman, citing a DSS security report as its reason.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Buhari directed the minister of justice to investigate both men

Ipob Threaten President Buhari On His Planned Visit To Enugu State

MUHAMMADU BUHARI MUST STAY CLEAR OF BIAFRA LAND OR HAVE HIMSELF TO    BLAME FOR THE OUTCOME OF ANY SUCH VISIT
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have received information that Retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari who committed treason on December 31, 1983, and was rewarded with Nigeria’s presidency after 32 years, will be visiting Enugu-Biafraland on the 22nd of December, 2016. We assert that inviting a killer and persecutor of Biafrans to our land is an insult to the memory of those killed by Muhammadu Buhari. Therefore, we object totally to this visit by the killer of Biafrans. We recall that Buhari started his killing of Biafrans with the assassination of Major General J. T. U. Aguiyi-Ironsi on July 29, 1966. He followed up with the mass-murder of over two million Biafrans in 1968 at Owerri during the war of genocide on Biafra by Nigeria and Britain. From June 17, 2015, till date, Buhari has killed over two thousand unarmed and peaceful Biafrans.
We warn any governor or Igbo politician that receives Buhari in Enugu will have himself or herself to blame. We make it public that should there be a breakdown of law and order in Enugu on the 22nd of December, greedy Igbo politicians will have themselves to blame. Any Igbo governor or politician that is found among those hobnobbing with Buhari the killer of Biafrans becomes an enemy of the people and shall pay dearly for it.
Until all those detained are released, and Amnesty International report investigated, Buhari is not allowed into any part of Biafraland. Let Buhari know that if he (Buhari) comes to Enugu or any part of Biafraland, we will die with him there.
We are calling on all Biafrans to descend on Enugu on the said date of 22 December 2016 to show our anger and displeasure at this attempt by some greedy Igbo men to insult the memory of our glorious dead and those still in detention with our leader.
Should Buhari attempt to set foot on Enugu soil everybody involved, from Bart Nnaji to Governor Ugwuanyi will regret it. These criminal Igbo politicians without any iota of shame must know that Buhari is the Grand Patron of the terrorist Fulani Herdsmen that have been rampaging and killing our people in Enugu and other parts of Biafraland in the name of Islam. Buhari is the person behind the rise of the terrorist Fulani Herdsmen and must be made to know that we Biafrans are not in support of sponsors of terrorism. We are the children of the Most High God and do not associate with mass murderers like Buhari. Therefore we don't want him anywhere around our sacred land.
Any Governor or Igbo politician who is stupid enough to invite Buhari into our capital will be taught a lesson that will reverberate in history. They should try us and see.
A word is enough for the wise!
Signed

EFCC Arrests Oil Tycoon Olajide Omokore

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Atlantic Energy Chairman, Olajide Omokore, on allegations of corruption and money laundering.

This comes days after British police detained former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

“He is being interrogated,” a security official, who did not want to be identified, told Reuters. He gave no further details.

Atlantic Energy was one of two firms that signed so-called Strategic Alliance Agreements with NNPC’s upstream arm, NPDC, in May 2011 to manage oil blocks sold by oil major, Royal Dutch Shell.
